Childish Gambino Next Album
I cover music and entertainment across as many genres as possible, but with a focus on heavy metal and hip-hop. I grew up outside Philadelphia and moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, from which I earned a Bachelor of Journalism.
Childish Gambino maintains radio silence, but evidence continues to mount. Childish Gambino, real name Donald Glover, has always worn his outsider persona with pride. Everything We Know (So Far) About Childish Gambino's Next Album. 11/8/2016 by Carl Lamarre. Childish Gambino's new album 'Awaken, My Love' will be released on December 2nd.
I’ve spent the past five years reporting on music festivals, local and touring artists, business openings and citywide cultural trends for the Austin American-Statesman and the Austin Chronicle. I strive to find the intersection between culture and commerce: the local blues guitarist who lives in a $400/month practice space to afford touring, the DIY arts collective that throws massive events to fund its monthly zine, and the implications of a superstar like Garth Brooks giving a keynote speech at South By Southwest, a festival originally designed to champion up-and-coming artists. I’ve also contributed to several national music publications, including Billboard, Paste, Alternative Press and Noisey.

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 03: Childish Gambino performs live onstage during 2017 Governors Ball Music Festival – Day 2 at Randall’s Island on June 3, 2017 in New York City. (Photo by Taylor Hill/Getty Images for Governors Ball) ’s winning streak didn’t stop with the meteoric success of his chart-topping new hit, “This Is America,” released under his musical moniker Childish Gambino.
In the week ending May 10, Childish Gambino enjoyed a staggering 419% album sales increase in the United States, reports. Glover released “This Is America” on Saturday, May 5, after he finished his double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
The song and its buzzy, politically charged video took off like wildfire, earning Childish Gambino his first No. “This Is America” also prompted fans to dig into his back catalog of albums, which sold 11,000 copies in the latest frame, a huge jump from slightly above 2,000 copies the previous week. Of this back catalog, three of Childish Gambino’s albums also reentered the Billboard 200 chart. His latest full-length effort, 2016’s “Awaken, My Love!”, reached No. 45 with 12,000 equivalent album units (up 156%), 5,000 of which were traditional album sales (up 268%).
Because the Internet climbed back to No. 61 with 10,000 units (up 178%) and 3,000 in sales (up 681%), while his full-length debut Camp grazed the bottom of the chart at No. 197, moving 5,000 units (up 174%) with 2,000 in sales (up 497%).
Obviously, Childish Gambino also had a tremendous week in terms of total on-demand streams, as his catalog earned 102.7 million clicks, which comprises both video and audio. That’s a 487% boost over the previous week, bolstered primarily by “This Is America,” which generated 65.3 million streams alone in its first week. Yet even without the boost from his new single, the rest of Childish Gambino’s discography still enjoyed a healthy 114% streaming boost. All of this bodes well for his next (and presumably final) studio album, which will likely come out later this year and include “This Is America.” Like what you’re reading? Follow me on for more. . Read more:. Why is Glover retiring Childish Gambino? Discussing his reasons for retiring his rap project, Glover told in June 2017: “There’s nothing worse than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’ You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.” Glover has spoken about Childish Gambino being a temporary project in the past. “I want to have periods in my life. I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings,” he said back in 2015.
Could it be his last album altogether? Perhaps – Glover’s creative director Ibra Ake hinted in an that the forthcoming LP is Glover’s “last” record completely. “I think we like to keep stuff under wraps, but there’s more coming, and we like to think of ourselves as like the Avengers every time we can assemble and all our schedules are in line,” Ake said of future plans in the pipeline. Ake added: “So that’s happening right now and we’re working rapidly to just get as much out as we can. Especially this last run, to really make a big bang, because this is Donald’s last album.” Glover recently opened up about his thoughts on the music industry, saying that.

Probably recent single, which came with a powerful and political video that went viral online. NME‘s Sam Moore previously wrote of the clip: “It’s the sort of agenda-setting, sit-up-and-take-notice work which only comes around every so often: it’s not even a stretch to describe it as a seismic moment in popular culture.
You can watch it over and over again and still pick up on something new.” As well as ‘This Is America’, Glover also on SNL in May. That may also feature on the next LP. What could the album sound like? ‘Awaken, My Love!’ saw Glover move away from the rap-leaning sound of the earlier Gambino albums and this next record could continue this path. Glover has previously said: “I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk.

Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.” What happened to that Chance The Rapper collaboration?

In February 2017, Glover said that the two artists were planning on collaborating. “We actually, like, sat down in the studio and were talking for a little bit. When he has a moment, we’ve been sitting down and working together,” he said at the time. Glover later said: “I feel like if I don’t make a Chance the Rapper mixtape, like a double mixtape, a bunch of 14-year-olds will kick my ass.“ Then in March of this year, Chance confirmed that the pair had collaborated, saying: “We perpetuated that rumour for a long time without recording anything We did link up in Atlanta and record some tracks and they’re amazing.” Chance previously featured on the Gambino tracks ‘They Don’t Like Me’ and ‘The Worst Guys’ while Glover featured on the ‘Acid Rap’ track ‘Favourite Song’.
